What is Microblading?

Movie stars, like Gwyneth Paltrow and Megan Fox, and musical legends like Madonna and Adele, as well as social media influencers with millions of followers, have all started to catch on to the cosmetic and aesthetic advantages of microblading, as have thousands of non-celebrity women around the world. Prior to microblading becoming a social media sensation, women with thin eyebrows would turn to eyebrow pencils to make them look fuller, and shapelier, but it did not provide the natural look, and the time required to get it right proved to be quite a hassle. Microblading is a semi-permanent, cosmetic procedure that involves a special tattooing tool that creates very fine lines over the eyebrows, matching the natural color of the brows to create a fuller and natural look. The microblading needles (approximately 12 tiny needles) finely implant medical grade pigment ink on the epidermis of the skin, creating fine, realistic and natural looking hair strokes. Unlike traditional tattooing, microblading does not involve going deep under the skin, but rather scratches the surface of the skin, leaving hair strokes that are far finer, and looking more natural than a regular tattoo. Microblading is not permanent however, and will usually begin to fade after 12 to 18 months.

What happens during a Microblading appointment?

The first thing your microblading specialist will do is shape the brow area by removing stray eyebrow hairs, called threading, and preparing the area for treatment. The specialist will take measurements around the eyebrows, factoring in the shape of the face, facial features and symmetry, and lightly sketch the new eyebrow on the face. You will be asked to make different facial expressions, like smile or laugh, to determine how the brows move to ensure symmetry. A topical numbing cream is then applied, which can take up to 40 minutes, during which time the cosmetologist and the client will choose the shade to be used for the desired look, as well as discuss the desired shape. Around 10 minutes before the numbing cream is ready, the microblading specialist will add a final layer of pigment that stays on for about 5 minutes. The area is then cleaned and the procedure is complete, and your new eyebrows are revealed. The microblading procedure will take approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete.

Does Microblading require aftercare?

After six to ten weeks, it is important to schedule a microblading follow-up appointment to ensure the longest lasting results. The follow-up appointment will involve smoothing out any imperfections that may have occurred during the healing process. This is also an opportunity to darken the color if needed, as well as adjust the shape, if you had decided to go with a thinner shape than you realized you wanted. You will be advised to avoid picking, scratching, or rubbing your eyebrows as this can lead to scarring. Also, avoid getting the area wet for 10 days, which means keeping your face dry while showering. You will be advised to refrain from applying make-up for at least a week. Annual touch-ups should occur every 1 to 3 years to touch-up any faded hair strokes, and help the microblading last longer.
